Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor Estuary: Ecosystem Condition and Recommendations
نویسنده
چکیده
New Jersey’s coastal bays are subject to ongoing multiple anthropogenic impacts from an expanding population in adjoining coastal watersheds. Eutrophication poses the most serious threat to the long-term health and function of the bays, impacting essential habitats (e.g., seagrass and shellfish beds) as well as finfish nursery areas. Nutrient and organic carbon loading in these shallow, lagoon-type estuaries has been linked to an array of cascading environmental problems such as increased microand macroalgal growth, harmful algal blooms (HABs), bacterial and viral pathogens, high turbidity/benthic shading, altered benthic invertebrate communities, and impacted harvestable fisheries. These problems are causing the deterioration of sediment and water quality, loss of

Benthic Macroalgal Blooms as an Indicator of System Eutrophy in the Barnegat Bay–Little Egg Harbor Estuary
Macroalgal blooms develop during the spring-summer period in the Barnegat Bay–Little Egg Harbor Estuary, a highly eutrophic coastal lagoon in New Jersey, and these blooms are detrimental to seagrass habitat in the system. Recurring blooms of drifting red and green macroalgae (e.g., Gracilaria tikvahiae and Ulva lactuca) attenuate or block light transmission to seagrass beds and also produce ext...

Seagrass is an important indicator of estuary condition. Results of a comprehensive investigation of the seagrass demographics in the Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor (BB-LEH) Estuary during 2008 indicate ongoing degradation of seagrass habitat associated with increasing eutrophic conditions. Surveys of seagrass beds in BB-LEH from spring to fall in 2008 show that the seagrass (predominantly Zost...

Numerous surveys have demonstrated that diffuse pollution from urban-residential run-off and industrial discharges can adversely impact salt marsh and tidal creek sediment quality (Barrett & McBrien, 2006; Fox et al., 2001; Iannuzzi et al., 1995; Long et al., 1995; Sanger et al., 2004; White et al., 2005). The impact of shipping activities, including major discharge of fuel oil onto salt marshe...

Abstract This study identified drivers of change in Barnegat Bay–Little Egg Harbor Estuary, NJ, USA over multiple long-term time periods by developing an assessment tool (an “Eutrophication Index”) capable of handling data gaps and identifying the condition of and relationships between ecosystem pressures, ecosystem state, and biotic responses. The Eutrophication Index integrates 15 indicators ...
